All of the Wild Lights

Sometimes, I think that my mom needs the internet taken away (hello, disinformation?) but every now and again she finds a way to make it worthy. She had been mentioning going to the Wild Lights at the Louisville Zoo so we purchased tickets and made our way down. Oddly enough, we avoided the Kentucky Derby timeframe but hit the big golf tournament so I really want to focus on the lights, nothing else.

We had never been before so we really had low expectations. It’s not that I wouldn’t recommend it, but there are a few tips and tricks that may help if you decide to go later.

• None of the vending machines worked. I thought it would be easy to buy water if needed, but it was not. Bring your full water bottles ready to go.
• The sun goes down late in Louisville. The sun was still out at our 8pm time, so try to go as late as you’re willing. The sun eventually went down and it was nice to actually see the lights, but we didn’t even go until 8 or 8:30 to start.
• It’s really just the lights. There was a small performance or 2 and some animals were out but really it was about the lights. If you think you are exploring the zoo at night, you really aren’t.
• You might consider waiting to buy parking. We went towards the middle of when they had the exhibition but I pre-paid for parking and it was never checked. There was really no issue with parking so unless you go at a super busy time, just wait.

Overall, the lights were beautiful and we did have a nice time – minus the wait in line for water. We’d probably go again but try to plan ahead a bit for a better hotel. But I think it’s a fun, easy activity if you’re in the area!
